Donald Trump Jr., President Trump’s eldest son has supposedly met with a Russian Lawyer in the midst of the 2016 presidential election on June 9th, 2016, furthering the legitimacy of possible ties of the Trump administration to Russia.
Before making any dubious claims on the matter, the facts stand as Donald Trump Jr. met with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian Lawyer, alongside Jared Kushner for an estimated time span of 20 to 30 minutes in Trump Tower. Ms. Veselnitskaya supposedly offered information on Trump’s competitor, Hillary Clinton. Now Ms. Veselnitskaya has worked with the Russian government to some degree considering her involvement in an attempt to overturn the Magnitsky Act.
In regards to the legality of the matter, it has been made clear so far that Donald Trump Jr. did not violate the law. With the information given, President Trump was not aware of such meeting, leaving the President in the clear.
“The president was not aware about this meeting, did not participate in this meeting. As far as other meetings go, look, the president has said that he was not aware of it, wasn’t involved in it. And there’s been no indication otherwise,” claimed Jay Sekulow, a member of President Trumps legal team.
The emails that were exchanged were released to the public, showing that there were indeed intentions of obtaining damaging information about Hillary Clinton’s campaign. However, due to the fact that no information was obtained, it is not a violation of the law.
Moscow, the capital of Russia, has also denied knowledge of this meeting, furthering away from the conspiracy of collusion between Russia and the Trump Campaign.
Special Counsel member Robert Mueller has planned to probe the meeting and email exchanges, with Republicans and Democrats calling for Donald Trump Jr. to testify before congress.
“Real evidence is coming forward that just can’t be ignored,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
